Fellowships
In 2003, NSGF initiated a fellowship program to promote compassionate care. To date, the Foundation has funded grants to 42 medical students to improve their capabilities as caregivers as well as to explore ways to enhance the delivery of compassionate care to patients.
The fellowships enable medical students to participate in the care of terminally and chronically ill patients under the supervision of faculty members with expertise in compassionate care. In addition to caring for patients, fellows are able to conduct research related to compassionate care. The fellows are required to submit papers at the conclusion of their projects detailing their findings and reflecting on their experiences.
The program is administrated in coordination with the Scholars in Medicine Office at Harvard Medical School. The Scholars in Medicine Office helps medical students plan optimal scholarship and volunteer experiences, including faculty mentored projects, and manages a host of community service opportunities.
